Some of the greatest Old Testament stories contain a great deal of killing, including Cain and Abel, Noah's Flood, the destruction of Sodom, the destruction of an entire Egyptian army as Moses and the Israelites fled, and the genocidal invasion of Canaan. Nearly all scholars also regard these stories as not part of history - the supposed events did not really occur. The Hebrew people enjoyed a good story as much as we do today, and one of the things that seem to make a good story is a lot of killing.
