Best Answer

when the amount of alumina in the hall heroult electrolytic cell decreases to a certain level then the voltage of the cell abruptly increases which leads to the failure of the cell.this effect is known as anode effect.

What is role of graphite rod in electrometallurgy of Al?

In the electrometallurgy of aluminium, a fused mixture of purified alumina (Al 2 O 3 ), cryolite (Na 3 AlF 6 ) and fluorspar (CaF 2 ) is electrolysed. In this electrolysis, graphite is used as the anode and graphite-lined iron is used as the cathode. During the electrolysis, Al is liberated at the cathode, while CO and CO 2 are liberated at the anode, according to the following equation. If a metal is used instead of graphite as the anode, then O 2 will be liberated. This will not only oxidise the metal of the electrode, but also convert some of the Al liberated at the cathode back into Al 2 O 3 . Hence, graphite is used for preventing the formation of O 2 at the anode. Moreover, graphite is cheaper than other metals.

What are the chemical reactions that take place during the electrolysis of molten aluminum chloride?

The half reactions are Al+3 + 3 e- -> Al (at the cathode) and 2 Cl-1 -> Cl2 + 2 e- at the anode. Applying the proper integers by which to multiply the half reactions so that the number of electrons received at the cathode equals the number of electrons given up at the anode gives an overall reaction of 2 Al+3 + 6 Cl-1 -> 2 Al + 3 Cl2.

Are there English and Arabic cognates?

There are probably a few, because some mathematical, chemical, and item terms in English derive originally from Arabic words. (Chemistry comes from al-Kimia, Algebra comes from al-Jabr, Admiral from Amir al-Bahr, Cotton from the al-Qoton, Apricot from al-Barqoq, etc.) Conversely, many modern and physics terms in Arabic derive originally from English words. (al-Elektron comes from Electron, al-Kombyuter comes Computer, at-Telfiziyun comes from Television, al-Mol comes from Mol, etc.) Arabic for "alcohol", for example, is "al-kahul", which literally means related to "kohl" -- a dark pigment used in male eyeshadow.
