Most likely because God wanted to show the world his superiority and power over us by making us smart and able to choose the right choice if we want to.
God made us in his image and since God obviously isn't a caveman we were created to be able to talk and have a higher intellegence over other animals like him. We were also given souls, which, I don't know if cavemen had souls or not. Also, I don't think God would make Adam and Eve so that they would not be able to communicate and have a relationship with him.
