Concise Answer
Arabian merchants were important locally because they were the primary force responsible for bringing food and foreign manufactures to more local populations of Arabs. In the wider historical culture, Arabian merchants were responsible for assisting the transmission of Islamic religion and culture outside of the borders of the Islamic Empires of the time. It is because of Arabian merchants that West Africa, the Eastern Coast of Africa, and Indonesia converted in large numbers to Islam.

More Description
Arabian Merchants really performed four major tasks:

  1. They brought food that was grown outside of Arabia into Arabia. Since most of Arabia is desert, it cannot grow enough food to help the people survive and trade is necessary to bring in the grains and other foodstuffs to keep the population alive.
  2. They brought products from outside of the Arab would into the Arab world, like weapons made in Europe or porcelain made in China. These were advanced technologies beyond the local Arabian ability to replicate.
  3. They helped to export Islam when they went on trade missions because they would have conversations with the locals who were not Muslim and convince them to convert.
  4. They spread the slave trade by buying, transporting, and re-selling slaves.
