1) Unscrew the shift Knob (counterclockwise) 2) Reach down into the inside base of the shif boot with your fingers pushing out from two sides and simply pull the boot and its associated plastic liner straight out. Its pops out very easily. 3) Turn the boot inside out Presumably the objective is to replace the old synthetic boot. 4) There is a tie wrap at the top of the boot. Just clip the tie wrap off so the plastic bushing at the top is free. 5) Unwrap the bottom of the boot from the plastic base 6) Install a replacement boot using a new tie wrap. 7) Wrap the new boot around the plastic base and snap the assembly back into place. (You may want to lubricate the linkage while you're at it.)

More than likely the CV Joints are defective. These are the U joints in the front that drive the front wheels. Inspect them for a torn boot and damage. Replacement is the only fix.
If the CV joints are in good shape, only replace the boots. A aftermarket boot can be installed with out changing CV joints. VW bugs has been doing this for years. If the joints are scored then pull the outside wheel,hub and bearing (need puller). Disconnect turning rods. Reassemble
Cleats are normally plastic and moulded to the boot sole there are normally 6 to 8 depending on the make of the boot. The normal rugby boot will have aluminium studs which screw in for replacement and these boots carry 6 to 10 studs
