The reasons they're called Native American is because they are native to America. The reason we call them Indians is because Cristopher Columbus thought he had found a new route to India when he first arrived in America. So "Indian" is an incorrect term. "Native American" is correct.

∙ 10y agoThey do not call themselves Indians. That name was given to them, originating from Columbus mistakenly thinking he was in India when he arrived in the Americas. Although it is long known that he was wrong in that assumption, the term has stuck. They themselves use the names of their tribes or Native Americans. Because some people still use the term Indians, they will use it to just so those others know what they mean.
