Simply because they do not offer the same functionality as mobiles and Voip. I do not think they'll disappear any time soon because:

voip is much cheaper and can even be free

email is taking a large chunk of business from landlines

landlines do not offer video conferencing (yet)

BUT you can't have reasonably priced internet connection without a landline first!
