Unfortunately, antibiotics are less effective today than they once were. Over the years, many bacteria have become resistant to antibiotic. Antibiotic resistance results when some bacteria are able to survive in the presence of an antibiotic.

Antibiotics are an artificial boost to your immune system. The more you ingest, the quicker your body stops supporting its own immune system because it thinks it's making too many antibodies. Antibiotics are nice because they lead us to a quicker recovery. But we are dependent on them now. When we abuse antibiotics we allow germs to build up a tolerance to them. Thus, one day germs will exists for which there is no cure.

doctors shouldn't over prescribe antibiotics because

people can form antibiotic resistance. This means that if a person keeps taking the same antibiotic medicine too much their body will get used to it, and be able to withstand the effects of the medicine.

Because the organisms that the antibiotics kill (to make you better) evolve resistance to the antibiotics when they are exposed to them. This means that the more the exposure (prescribing) the faster resistance develops. Antibiotics should therefore ONLY be used when really needed and taken EXACTLY as they are meant to. Stopping a dose of antibiotics before a full course of treatment is worse than over prescribing.

Doctors are now prescribing less prescriptions for antibiotics for coughs, colds and minor ailments in order to reduce the opportunity for the bacteria to develop further resistance.

Microorganisms are constantly evolving. If too many antibiotics are distributed doctors will be providing selection pressure for the increased fitness of antibiotic resistant pathogens.

How are antibiotics created?

Most antibiotics were first extracted from fungi. Then biochemists at pharmaceutical companies try various chemical modifications to make them more effective against a wider range of bacteria than the natural fungal product was. Once modified they must go through many lab and clinical tests to verify safety and effectiveness.

Why is penicillin not as effective as it was fifty years ago?

This isn't entirely true. Penicillin is still as effective against the bacteria that it combated 50 years ago, but new strains of penicillin resistant bacteria have evolved since 50 years ago. This means that penicillin is less effective against a larger percentage of bacteria than it was 50 years ago, solely because of the new, anti-biotic resistant strains. Can you keep penicillin for more than a year?

Antibiotics should not be taken after expiration because they lose their effectiveness. Less effective antibiotics may make the problem worse by causing more bacteria in your body to be resistant to antibiotics.
