In the 1890s, the bongo population was nearly wiped out by a disease called rinderpest. Since then, they have suffered from large-scale hunting (often illegal hunting with the use of snares or dogs). The bongo are often hunted for their large size, their horns, or their colorful, unusual pelts. Also, there has been recent increased predation by lions. Not to mention, that the bongo has very specialized habitat needs and dwell deep within forests, yet these forests are being cleared for agricultural processes such as logging or farming to take place, leaving the bongo without a means to survive.
