Why are boys mean when they are together and nice when they are alone?

Because of stupid inherited male competition. Usually the more intelligent and confident the boy is, the less likely he is to want to "show off" in front of the other boys.
If you find a boy that's just as nice in the presense of other boys as he is alone then you have got yourself a keeper. Or a decent gay friend.
