Front wheel drive cars are easier to drive in bad weather than rear wheel drive cars. It's much easier to spin out in a RWD car especially in snow and ice. This is because the weight is not over the drive wheels and you get less grip. Also if all cars were RWD many many teenagers would be killed being idiots since it's much easier to lose control.
There's no performance benefit of FWD, it's just easy and safe for the common driver. See also: Boring

You can. However, you have to buy the correct type. Rims made for real wheel drives typically do not fit front wheel drive cars. You have to find rims made for front wheel drive cars. Some stores simply do not carry them.

All 1976-1979 Cadillac Sevilles were rear wheel drive. Front wheel drive wasn't used on these cars.
