Because with the weapons and technology we have now, anything could knock through a castle. Whereas in those days they were primarily built for protection. We have a different style of living now.

1. Protection. Castles are rendered useless by modern weapons. They would only provide a small amount of protection to small arms fire.
2. Time Consumption. They take a long, long time to build.

Castles are used, but mostly for entertainment. Unless you recall Kings and Queens, well, that's just old medevil stuff. You've just been reading some fantasy stories about the medevil times.

They aren't particle! The wooden walls would burn or rot. They aren't safe people can just blow up stuff to get in. Style of houses have changed. Nobody wants to live there. I'm not saying they aren't great places to live, I'd love to! Lots of people don't have money for servants to clean such a big place! Also lots of castles now are used as museums. Hope this helps more than the stuff above! :)

The reason for Castles, was they were good protection against the weapons of their day. Now an F-15E Eagle can drop a bomb that weighs thousands of pounds and blow them to bits in seconds. They don't work anymore against modern weapons.

Castles were designed as defensive fortresses for nobles to live in. They're no longer necessary for this purpose, nor are they particularly effective against modern weaponry (they're great against a bunch of peasants armed with sticks, or even some rival nobles with swords; against a cannon not so much, and against a B-29 they might as well not even be there).

Simply put, 'air superiority'. Aircraft can protect lands more easily than land-based castles.
