Dogs are (to varying degrees, depending upon the specific dog) cute, cuddly, loyal, friendly, and uncritical. Dogs have a wonderful sense of enthusiasm about things that seem quite ordinary to most people, such as having a meal or even a snack. We can enjoy the pleasure that they take in such things.
It seems clear that dogs have developed a unique ability to read the social cues and body language of humans. They have been wired by evolution to attend to and to be responsive to human behaviors. See link for more. Not even wolves, the evolutionary ancestors of dogs, have this ability, nor to champanzees, our closest genetic relatives. Animal behaviorists argue about what this really means. Are dogs experiencing any kind of 'emotional' closeness with us, or are they responding purely to conditioning? Ultimately these questions are meaningless; we know how much dogs improve our lives and fill (most of) us with joy.
