This is a matter of taste; there are as many people who say cats are nicer than dogs as say dogs are nicer than cats.
The major points in the favour of cats seem to be that they need less food and care than dogs; that they are also good at controlling household pests like mice; and, because they are independent, they seem more intelligent than dogs. The average cat is also smaller than the average dog, and so is a better fit for the human lap.
