Dogs are pack animals. In the wild they ran in packs and instinctively they protect their pack. Domestic dogs think of their owners as part of their pack.

The dogs get very attached to one person. That person is usually the person who spends the most time with them, which should be their owners. If the dog feels like something or someone is a threat to their owners, they will growl and a back off warning and if you don't they will snap or bite at them.

Dogs are protective of their owners because they are loyal. When a dog owner feeds its dog, takes it on walks, and just shows affection for it, dogs will do anything to protect that person that does all those things for them. My dog is so protective of me that he hardly lets my brother touch me without eying him. Think of it as when parents have kids they will do anything and everything to protect them, and even give their life for them. Well in a case of dogs to humans, the Humans are the kids that the dogs think need protecting, and the dogs are the parents that will do anything to ensure this protection happens.

Is the Azawakh a good breed for inexperienced dog owners to own?

Experts do not recommend the Azawakh to first time dog owners or owners who haven't had canine dogs. These dogs do not do well with small children. Even though they do well with adult children who are considerate, respectful and affectionate, the Azawakh should never be left with them unsupervised. These dogs are very protective with their territory, home, and with their family. Their awareness is very high along with their suspicious nature especially with strangers.
