Because of two main reasons:

  1. Hunting & Poaching - Trophy Hunting and Ivory Poaching is the main reason for the decline in numbers of African elephants. There were once millions of these animals and now only a few thousand survive
  2. Habitat Loss - As human numbers grew, people started settling into forests and that has also affected elephant populations.
  3. This species is currently considered "Vulnerable", not endangered.

Over all the species is classified as vulnerable, in some places, such as southern Africa, the elephant populatino has recovered. However, the forest elephant is disappearing rapidly, and there are countries where the elephant is severely endangered, as well as some countries which no longer have elephants (i.e. they are locally extinct).

Firstly, elephants are widely hunted for their tusks as it is highly-valued. Hunters would kill the whole elephant just for its tusks.

Secondly, elephants are rapidly losing their habitat and sources of food due to global warming. Trees and fruits are not growing abundantly as temperature rises, causing lack of water. This results in competition for food, and they get less food.

Poachers are hunting them. Young bulls are killed for ivory because they have killed off the older bulls for the tusks and now the young are mainly the ones left. Teen elephants who have seen their family killed by poachers suffer from the fact they are alone and they remember the loss of mothers and their family. A elephants stays with their mom at least 5 years and is taken care of by a family group of aunts and others.
