most emergency stuff such as signs and labels used to be red the RED CROSS organisation has a a patent on the red cross, and several years ago won a court battle to stop others from using the red cross when this happened emergency signs etc like a red cross on a first aid kit,and fire escape or emergency exit signs were changed to green to comply with the law after the red cross association won their lawsuit

Under the UL standard for internally illuminated exit signs, they must be either red or green, each of which provides high contrast to a white background, or when used as white letters on a red or green background.
