Why are gay people not portrayed as much in the Asian and African media compared to the North American media?

Because in Asia and Africa, the majority of countries regard homosexuality as a grave sin, and have made it illegal. Most of those cultures will not talk about it in public. Some even believe it doesn't exist in their country.
The only exception in Africa is South Africa, and the only exception in Asia is Israel (and to a small extent: the Philippines, Nepal, Taiwan, and Japan). If you search the media of these countries, you'll have a better chance.
