Contour lines on a on a topographic map indicate elevations. Since elevation changes gently on gentle slopes the contour lines are further apart. Elevation changes rapidly on a steep slope so the contour lines are closer together.

The lines represent the elevations in standard increments, such as 2', 100' or 1000'. Therefore, the steeper the grade, the closer the lines. In other words, if a hill is very steep and the elevation increases by a given amount over a lateral distance of 100 yards, for instance, the lines will be close together so as to represent how quickly the elevation rises. If the elevation increases by the same amount, but over a lateral distance of 1000 yards, the lines will be further apart.
