They literally have gray fur. They were the first gray coloured wolf discovered

not all gray wolves are gray they can be gray, black, white and more
It's unknown why they are called a wolf, but they are called a grey wolf because they are usually grey but some are black, others brown, and some are albino. Others say just wolfs because they look nothing like a grey wolf.
