TB is short for tuberculosis which is due to the tubercle bacillus which is a bacteria named Mycobacterium tuberculosis. People who have been exposed to tubercle bacilli may have no symptoms if the infection is dormant or latent. It can become active at any time and cause a severe and life threatening illness and then become infectious to other contacts. TB testing is used to identify and treat people, especially those in the health care field with latent asymptomatic disease to help prevent its conversion into active disease and spread to other people. Testing is also used on people who have symptoms suspicious of TB for diagnostic purposes.
