In many ways, humans are the weakest animal on the planet.
This has come to be due to backward and unnatural selection.
For example, greedy people and peoples can better afford food and health care.
(not just in the last few hundred years, but always.)
The power-hungry gain power with similar benefits.(Look at congress)
Children have been "saved" and then often reproduce, having offspring who , also, must be "saved" due to some chemical or immune defect which would otherwise have been eliminated.
This shift from protecting biological soundness to protecting what we as humans cherish more, has caused the weakness you have noticed
