Interest groups have the power to influence because they can provide elected officials with more measurable results to read their situation. It is like saying "The NRA wants this." Well now elected officials know that all the members of the NRA want something. With individuals it is hard to know just what your people want when they all just grumble to their TV's individually.

Secondly (and perhaps more importantly) an interest group has fund raising ability that they can use to propel favored candidates into office or lobby to get their views heard.
