The Kaaba, the first building erected for the purpose of monotheistic worship, is in Makkah. The change of the qiblah from Jerusalem to Makkah was revealed in the Holy Qur'an while the Muslim congregation was praying.

Mosques face the direction of Mecca because that is the direction in which Muslims pray. Muslims do not pray to Mecca, only in its direction. This direction does not have to be east, as it depends on one's location (for example, Muslims in China pray towards the west).

The mosques face east because mecca is located there, but also because mecca is considered a holy place. it is considered the most holy city in the Islamic religion and so when people are praying in the mosques, they are parying to mecca.
