The suggestion that praying in front of a statue is idolatry, is a pejorative that comes from the false belief that it is the statue itself that is being worshipped or venerated. In fact, the statue only represents the saint or god, and is only an aid to prayer. Not only Catholics and Hindus pray in front of statues, but also Buddhists, Daoists and others. The ancient Greeks, Romans and people of the Near East also had statues and figures of their gods.
