The Kindle Fire is WAY better if all you want to do is read books.
You can't upload paper books to a Kindle. You need them in electronic form. If you had to upload a paperback, the only way I can think of is scanning it and then uploading it as PDF (warning: if it's not out of copyright, that would be illegal).
Probably the Kindle - since it's far more durable than paper ! Also - from a storage point of view - you can store hundreds of books on a Kindle - in a device which is thinner and smaller than the average paperback !
