Sometimes, a parent's attempt to teach their child something is tainted by their own baggage and their inappropriate attachment to the outcome of the lesson. Children are, in part, an attempt to correct the past, but using only the tools of the past. We love our kids, but often can't help but want to bully them into being this or that.
Someone outside the family is not (usually) so easily triggered, emotionally. Sure, they might not have the emotional investment, but they do have a degree of useful distance. Also, they might offer as perspective that compliments (rather than just repeats) that of the family.
