Every year the Queen of England chooses people who have done a variety of things, such as winning medals at The Olympics, working at the top of an industry for many years and made it profitable, sports, people/actors who have have been going for ever. These people are given either MBE's, CBE's OBE's and if they are lucky enough they get a KBE. This is a Knight of the British Empire. Having this title means they can be addressed as Sir. Now to be a Lord you have to go one step further, but they only appoint a couple each year.
It is when they have been knighted by the reigning Monarch for deeds done for the better of the Country that they are given the title Sir. It is a privilege given.
