Why are people so obsessed with World War 2?

Are you kidding?! It is amazing. Not only the war, but the events leading to it and surrounding it are utterly intriguing. Never before WWII did we really have the ability or technology to have such global inclusion. To me, that is very interesting. It's one of the most innovative explosions in technology ever. It was effective enough to where it was leaps-and-bounds above older weaponry, but still on a scale small enough that the fighting was man vs man, and in your face. Compared to now, where we push buttons, guide lasers, shoot from 400 yards away.

Because of the war, we have jets, rockets, nuclear power, etc. The ingenuity and resources for the war pushed us into technological boom that we have experienced in the last 50 years. In the 50 years before that, we went from riding horses to being able to have 100s of HUGE aircraft carriers ferry hundreds-of-thousands of soldiers all the way to far off islands. Could you imagine looking into the ocean today and viewing naval ships as far as the eye could see?

We will never again see anything on that scale or with that amount of sheer man power. Everything now is about efficiency. The sacrifices made in the war were astonishing. The sheer Magnitude of it is unbelievable. An estimated 70 MILLION people died in the war.

The story of how it affected each country is more prolific than anything that could come from imagination. Overnight, Germany changed political structure and was swept away by a charismatic politician, who promised a struggling nation hope, and eerie mysticism (ancient aliens type ish*). Meanwhile, the party was leaving a trail of clandestine murders behind it, which would eventually build up to full blown genocide, which is possibly the most cruel horrific event ever (just Google Holocaust images).

In america, you'd be doing something for the war effort. Car plants would no longer make cars, they'd make weapons and military vehicles, planes, etc. Quaint, romantic towns in Europe would be the scene insane blood shed in harsh, cold elements. Beautiful beaches would be the site where thousands of men willingly ran into oncoming machine gun fire as bullets clanked off their ships, and their doors were lowered. Japaneese citizens were preparing to join their army and fight to the death with sticks and stones, if it was deemed necessary by their emperor. And, for the first time ever, you would be able to follow this through the newly blossomed national media. Your heart would break each day as you learned someone you loved or knew was wounded or dead.

I could go on and on and still not do it justice. And, this just happened 60+ years ago. War is horrible, but the sacrifices made in ww2 are worthy of obsessing about. It's without a doubt the most important (non-spiritual) event in human history. Had it gone differently, you would literally be speaking Japanese or German now.
