There are two possible reasons:
1) There can be more pollution near airports and highways, and one possible cause of atherosclerosis, the hardening of the arteries, is pollution. The less elastic the arteries are, the higher the blood pressure.
2) The area around highways and airports is often predominantly poorer neighborhoods. Those with lower incomes tend to have diets that contribute to the development of vascular disease, including atherosclerosis and buildup within the arteries.
