You've heard the term: "No news is good news"?

It's because bad news sells more. People care more about murdered children than they do about firefighters saving lives.

The majority of people will (proven fact) vote on how the candidate *looks* over what they will do. If a candidate is gay, or got a DUI in their past is somehow very relevant during a campaign. Just look at the '08 race (in America). Republicans being bashed for voting with Bush, Democrats being bashed for out-of-context quotes.

It's sickening if you think about it.
