They come to us from ancient Celtic legends. Today we see them as pretty little things that are nice, but they were mean and ugly centuries ago. They were a means to explain things the ancients didn't understand. There was no science or medicine so when a person was hurt or in a coma it was explained that the fairies had taken their soul. To get it back someone had to go to a fairy mound and dig it up to get their soul back, but the fairies would cast a spell making them fall asleep before they could finish. Mermaids and other creatures also have stories like these.
