Poppies grew wild in the fields in Flanders, where many of the battles of World War 1 took place. They particularly proliferated after the battles were over, the soil churned up, and the area fertilised with the blood of thousands. For this reason they are a significant link with war veterans. It is fitting that they be sold to raise funds for the veterans of any conflict, or their widows, who need help.

See the related link which contains the poem "In Flanders Field", highlighting the significance of these battlefields.

Why does the US honor veterans on Veterans Day?

Remembering veterans is a way to honor the people in the military for what they have done and are doing and the sacrifices they have made, including their lives, to ensure our way of life. Veterans are very important people and I think they should be honored in numerous ways. Veterans should be honored because they once dedicated themselves into doing a noble act. The ultimate sacrifice that was given by few veterans to benefit the many people of the United States of America was provided by many years in ghastly wars and battles. Put the politics aside and just consider the soldier who doesn't make much money, get much time off, or is away from his family months at a time but still, people in the military have a fundamental belief they are protectors of our country. Veterans put their lives at peril because they wanted to fight for their nation's freedom. Instead of sitting down on a snug armchair with a soft robe on sipping tea, they go out and fight for what's right. Veterans sacrificed the time spent with their family because they go out to battle other troops, not being able to be in the same room as their loved ones. Veterans contributed their efforts to make the U.S safe, even though they could have passed away at any second.

Why do Brits wear Poppy pins?

It is a mark of respect. The Poppy represents the fallen in times of war because after World War One the fields which used to have the trenches in them grew thousands of poppies. It is believed that the growth of the poppies is linked to the rotting corpses left behind from the war. Therefore every year we wear poppies to remember those who died for our country in any conflict. The money raised from selling the poppies is used to look after veterans and injured soldiers.

What is the history of the poppies for peace and movement?

The bomb blasted battle fields of the Somme, at the end of the first world war, became carpeted with wild red poppies. The red poppy was adopted to symbolise the futility of war. It has also become a means to show our appreciation for the sacrifice made by so many. Artificial red poppies are sold each year, gathering in money that can be used to aid veterans of any conflict today.

What have red poppies got to do with WW1?

Poppies actually came from WWI, not WWII. There was a major battle on Flanders Fields where thousands lost their lives. After the battle poppies grew where the men had died and a poem was written called "Flanders Field"Here is the text of that poemIN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blowBetween the crosses row on row,That mark our place; and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,Loved and were loved, and now we lieIn Flanders fields.Take up our quarrel with the foe:To you from failing hands we throwThe torch; be yours to hold it high.If ye break faith with us who dieWe shall not sleep, though poppies growIn Flanders fields.Ever since then, veterans have sold poppies at the entrances to stores as a way to raise money for disabled veterans groups and now the poppies stand for all veterans of all wars.
