The producers in any ecosystem form the base of an energy pyramid. The base always supports their own base and then the layers going up which become smaller. These upper levels are the consumers.

If you look at this beginning base getting 100% of the energy (sunlight), the producers (plants, trees, bushes, shrubs and anything else that makes its' own food using the energy from the sunlight), these producers need 90% for their own grown and reproduction.

That allows 10% to be passed to primary consumers on the second level. They need this 10% to grow and reproduce and they have 10% of that first 10% to pass to the secondary consumers. That is 1% of the original.
Most ecosystems can only support 3-4 levels. A few only 2 levels (look at the Sahara Desert). There are only two places that can support 5 levels: the tropical rain forests and the temperate rain forests.

Good luck even trying to hack your way through these there is so much vegetation and so many consumers.
