If you have to sleep outside, getting cold, not feeling safe and not eat properly and of course feeling bad about your situation and the things and people you have lost some feel the need to turn to alcohol and drugs to be able to cope, just like many who are not homeless turn to alcohol and drugs to deal with their problems. Some are also mentally ill without insurance or relatives.
