Contrary to present societal thought we aren't all equal. Some people are smarter, some stronger, some more musically inclined. Gifted children lucked out and received the genetic set up to be more intelligent, had a personality to pursue what they wanted, lived in a society that provided the opportunities to use that ability, had the financial backing to allow opportunities and had a range of support people (parents, friends, teachers) to help them use the opportunities that presented themselves.
Any of these factors would help a child be better (more gifted) in any field they want, together these factors can be a tremendous advantage.
Some good programs for gifted children vary depending on the programs at your local public school. You should ask your teacher if you believe your child is gifted.

There are many good things about being gifted. A gifted child always thinks differently which could help a lot. Also gifted children have special talents some people can't do. I know one gifted child with autism who has a photograpic memory. Being this way is not always a bad thing I think it just makes you special!
Some children who are gifted can not go to gifted programs for various reasons. If they can not go, they will not get challenged to their full potentials. You can ask the teacher to give the child a more challenging curriculum, transfer schools, or wait until middle school or high school for your child to get accepted into Gifted, Honors, or AP classes.
