This can vary a lot between different meteors; the main classification, if I remember correctly, is between "ice meteors" that are made up mainly of ice, and "rock meteors", out of rocky materials.

comet is mainly ice, and so it leaves a trace as it gets close to the sun. meteors is not made of ice, but made of metal, solids, rocks, anything that doesn't melt easily and so it does not leave a trace or particles behind.
They are both in space and there made of rock, dust, and ice and they can see them here on earth.
