Teens have always been sucking their thumbs, as do adults, but, lately, it's a behavior with less societal inhibitions than it used to have. There is no known reason for teenaged public thumb sucking, at this time, but it probably has to do with a generalized acceptance and understanding of previously inhibited behaviors due to the internet which has been successful in pubicizing what had been, previously, considered nonexistent. Those indulging were, at first, enbravened. These days it's becoming, slowly, more socially acceptable and, if enough participate, it may be permanently acceptable on a wider scale.
