Dissolved is perhaps the wrong word, as these borders never really existed in a physical sense to begin with. Even with today's technology, it's utterly impossible to secure the approximately 4,000 mile border with Mexico, much less the far larger one with Canada. And the main questions would be, "Why would we want to secure these borders?".

In both cases, Mexico and Canada are very active allies and trade partners and, especially in the case of Canada, a very strong intelligence partner as well. Physical security always has a chilling effect on progress of all kinds, and this must also be factored into the security equation.

Infiltration along these giant borders conducted by expert teams of insurgents would be virtually impossible to stop, no matter what we tried to do. All increased security along the borderlines would do at this time is inhibit honest, legal trade and spend a huge amount of money, with virtually zero impact on anyone we don't want in-country.

The Risk/Benefit analysis simply makes this undesirable in the extreme.
