Apart from the likelihood that the early Christians actually believed the Old Testament stories, they needed to demonstrate antiquity for their religion. Almost every new religion is founded on earlier beliefs, because it is difficult to convince potential converts that your God is real unless there is a long history of belief in that God and his prophets.
