That's only true in the summer. In the winter, it's the opposite, the nights are long, only 3 or 4 hours of daylight. The further north you go, the more extreme the day/night cycles are.

This is because the earth isn't "straight up and down" aligned with the sun. The earth is tilted, and as it rotates around the sun, the tilt is pointing closer towards the sun part of the year, and pointing away from the sun the rest of the year. Imagine the hands of a clock as being the poles of the earth. Instead of being at 12 and 6, the hands of the clock are at 10 and 4. Now walk with the clock around a lamp or a light source, always keeping the 10-hand pointed in the same direction. As you go around the light, you'll see the 10-hand point towards the light, then on the other side, point away. This experiment shows the seasons in the northern and southern hemispheres.

Also, take a look at the hand pointing towards the "4". The same effect is true there as well, so the same long-days in the summer, short-days in the winter effect happens in the extreme south as well, just at the opposite time of year.

In northern Alaska, the days are long during summer due to its location above the Arctic Circle. This region experiences the phenomenon of the midnight sun, where the sun remains visible for 24 hours a day. This occurs because of the tilt of the Earth's axis and the way sunlight hits that part of the globe during the summer months.

How long does it take for a boat to travel from Alaska to California?

Well, since you didn't specify where in California, we'll assume you mean Northern California. A sailing from Juneau, Alaska to San Francisco (for example) would take about 3.5 days - assuming no stops and an average comfortable cruising speed of about 14 knots. Add an additional day or so for a call on Los Angeles or San Diego. Happy Sailing!

Is it possible to predict the northern lights?

Yes, but not very long in advance. When there is a lot of activity on the surface of the sun and it ejects material towards Earth, the Northern Lights can be seen. So if the activity on the Sun is seen, then it is possible to predict that the Northern Lights will be seen in the following hours and days.

How did the discovery of gold help the farmers in Alaska?

Before the gold rush (the discovery of gold in Alaska and other parts of the U.S.), Alaska was considered worthless. When Secretary of State William Seward negotiated the sale of Alaska to The U.S. from the Russia Empire in 1867, Alaska was called "Seward's Icepick" because it was just a frozen wasteland to most Americans. Alaska was an unofficial US territory and didn't become a state until the 1950's so when the gold rush happened in the 1890's, not many non-native people were in Alaska. The discovery of gold brought money and people to Alaska. The people needed food from farmers. The farmers grew food and then sold it to the people. Because Alaska is very cold, there is not much farming. In the places where crops can be grown, the growing season is only 100 days long. The days, however are longer than normal, so the 100 days are productive.

Is Russia more in the northern hemisphere or the eastern hemisphere?

Russia lies entirely in the northern hemisphere and almost entirely in the eastern hemisphere (it almost touches Alaska in the western hemisphere), so the answer to your question would be that it is more in the northern hemisphere.
