The five pillars serve to organize a Muslim's lifestyle in addition to his beliefs. The requirement of Salat or Prayer, creates the five-times-a-day prayer regimen. Zakat or Almsgiving serves to determine how much money must be given to the poor. Sawm or Fasting determines how the entire month of Ramadan is spent. Finally, Hajj or Pilgrimage directs a Muslim to go to Mecca once in his life, assuming he is able.
