A Bunsen burner flame consists of an inner cone and an inner cone. Copper coins are made of metal, as copper is a metal. However, most coins are not pure copper. In the US, the modern penny (one cent) is copper-coated zinc. There is copper in dimes, quarters and half-dollars as the inner "sandwich" of clad coins, between layers of zinc. Dimes, quarters, and halves are not "coated". They're laminated, made of a sandwich of outer cupronickel layers bonded to a pure copper core. It sounds as if you may have a "lamination error". That occurs when the outer cladding comes off one (or both) sides of the "sandwich" metal from which it was struck, leaving the inner copper core visible. This is a collectible item that can retail for $10 or $15.
