The profession of police, like that of the military, has long been dominated by the male gender, even though some women are now participants. And while policemen can be of any age, as can soldiers, they tend to enter the police force young, and consequently are affectionately referred to as boys. In some cases, where the police have blue uniforms, they may be known as our boys in blue, much as soldiers fighting in other countries may be known as our boys overseas.
