So we can keep this website free for you to use.
We provide information to you for free. However it costs millions to keep a website this size afloat.
Answers is an extremely popular website which has massive costs to cover. From staff payments, server costs, air conditioning costs to keep the servers cool, storage space for the servers and air conditioning, developers, technicians, engineers, administrators and so on. As said, it costs millions to keep Answers running every year. The adverts provide Answers with a source of revenue.
Money does not grow on trees, nor does it materialise out of thin air.
There are three ways a website can make money:
The site earns revenue through the ads. Registered users can disable them, however.
The site does have MANY answers to questions, but usually, those who accuse the site of not having answers are usually being impatient. It is a wiki site, meaning it is sort of a potluck affair. Others bring what they wish to the "table," but nobody is obligated to do so. If your questions are not being answered, perhaps it is how you asked it. Here are some reasons why your questions might not have any answers:
1. The question is unreadable. You have to use good grammar, formatting and spelling if you expect others to answer it.
2. The question should make logical sense and be capable of being answered. If you ask what time it is in a given country, you should give a reference time for Another Country. If you ask about the value of a coin, you should give at least minimum information about its date, country of origin, denomination, and features.
3. The question should not be harmful nor illegal. It should not ask how to harm oneself or others, nor ask how to do anything that is illegal. Such questions get trashed to catch-all categories and the user might be warned or blocked from the site.
4. The question should have value. If you ask what the weather is like without mentioning the place, ask what another user's name is, ask if other users are single, about about the dietary preferences of other users, the questions will likely be trashed to the Adds No Value category.
5. The question must be respectful. If you ask why some group is stupid, why a certain race steals all the time, or why a particular girl at your school has body odor, then the question will be trashed to the Cyberbullying category, and the user might lose access to the site. Cyberbullying is not tolerated on the site.
6. The question must not ask about porn sites or inappropriate things. If you ask where to find pornography or you ask about certain private anatomical features of others, even celebrities, the question will be trashed to the Porn Sites Catch-All or the Inappropriate Subject Matter Catch-All.
7. The question must not ask how to crack software nor bypass firewalls. Such questions get trashed to catch-all categories.
8. Obscure questions might go unanswered for a long time. There is nothing wrong with asking these, but do keep in mind that they might not get answers or that others will likely vandalize them. Any vandalism will be removed or reverted, but vandals are sometimes more likely to bother questions they consider boring.
