Patience and Fortitude! These names were bestowed by Mayor LaGuardia. A popular slang term ("The Lion House") has entered the Gotham vernacular for Public Library, and some other libraries have picked up this statuary custom - and the slang term. I use the Lion House a lot!Patience and Fortitude are the names of the lions in front of the library in New York. Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia named them.

The New York Public Library's lion sculptures which stand outside its entrance have stood there since the library's inauguration in 1911. The two lions were specially commissioned for the library. Edward Clark Potter was paid to create the lions, through the recommendation of the pre-eminent sculptor Augustus Saint-Gauden. Since their installation, they have maintained an unwavering guard of the library.
