The City of London (aka the Square Mile) has plenty of streets and alleys but, I'm told, not one of them is a 'Road'. Take a look at the map.The name ROAD came about where streets/lanes were good enough to enable horse riders and carriages, therefore places where others rode (road became the corruption of ride) upon. As the streets/lanes London of old wasn't wide enough for any carriage of the day, none of the the pathways got the status of being roads. Over time things change but old pathway names remain. Hence in the city there are no roads.
Fairly random. The busiest roads radiate from the city centre.
There are many roads in the UK called London Road. As the name suggests, they were all originally roads that led to London.
