They may have fin rot or fungi growing on them. You should get some generic treatment in straight away.

E.Coli, like most bacteria, smells different on different media. E-coli created on a dead fish would smell like rotting fish.

This is called pop - eye and fungus/rot, these happen when the water quality is poor and or the fish are stressed or have low immunity. Water should be changed, one fifth every 10-14 days then your fish should stay healthy. Get some Methylene blue or other treatment recommended to irradicate the problem.

Tadpoles eat a variety of diffrent things such as rotting vegtables. Just try throwing the Broccoli in the water for a few days and see what happens. My experince is that they like any kind of fish food.
