Inter caste marriage:
It is a popular belief that castes are based on occupation. The fact is that occupations are based on caste and it is not the other way.
Castes are based on Varnas, which is turn are based on modes of life.
There are four modes of life. They are:
- Brahmana/ Eternal/ Logical mode
- Kshatriya/ Semi permanent/ Natural mode
- Vaishya/ Conditional/ Virtual mode
- Shudra/ Temporary/ Reasonable mode
Modern people feel that castes are needless. This is because all modern people use reasoning. This, makes them compatible with each other, even if they belong to different castes.
Difficulties in Interaction among people of different castes: In Brahmana way of life all the activities of life are interconnected. Thus, they can't tell lies or cheat. In contrast, in Shudra life all activities are independent of each other and therefore they can tell lies and cheat.
Thus, the four castes are not very compatible with each other, unless they are modern. It is for this reason that inter caste marriages are not encouraged.
Disadvantages of inter caste marriages: Since marriages are supposed to last a life time inter caste marriages make life very complicated because it would force people who are not very compatible with each other to interact often. They also make every one more modern and less religious.
Advantages of inter caste marriages: Inter caste marriages make life more rational and modern and thus are welcome, if not very frequent.
Making inter caste marriages more acceptable: People are not bothered about the caste of other people. They are bothered more about the mode of life of the people they are dealing with. If the mode of life of two interacting people is the same they would be perfectly compatible with each other.
If a man and a woman of different castes wish to marry both of them should be able to use the modes of both the man and the woman.
Thus, inter caste marriages make life complicated not only for the couple but for the entire society they life in.
