Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) can have tattoos, and many do. However, Mormons believe that they should respect their bodies as sacred gifts from God and thus church officially advises against tattooing, even in places such as New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, and Africa where tribal tattooing is common. There is no penalty for having tattoos, it is simply "advised against", and many Mormons having very visible tattoos are faithful, active members of the church.
There are some more specific rules for Mormon missionaries who have tattoos. If someone with tattoos applies to be a missionary they need to try to keep these tattoos covered while proselyting. For many this means wearing long sleeves, even while going door to door all day in the summer heat.
